All you really can learn is that you have to be close to your subject for the flash to illuminate it. Your built-in flash might be useful at times, but not when you are learning photography. If you don’t understand this, then take photographs of shadows. Look at light that is revealing things closely. Do not photograph objects, photograph light. Think about this while you are walking around with your camera. THE LIGHT: You are not photographing the things in the world, but light reflected off those things. Put the thing people expect in the photograph half outside of it.

And if you don’t understand how to use edge, then just cut things off using one of the four edges of your camera frame. For this assignment do not just put your subject in the middle of the frame-use the edges very obviously. This is one way they differ from reality or how they abstract reality. Photographs have definite edges (frames). THE EDGE: Unless we are in a car or looking out some other window, we do not normally see the world with a frame around it. The image is not framed the way the viewer expects. The use of light is not obvious in this image, but the use of edge is very obvious.
